Easyjet flights cancelled as it shuts Stansted, Southend and Newcastle airport hubs

EasyJet has scrapped flights to Greece with further cancellations expected after revealing it's shutting three UK airport hubs.

The budget airline had been forced to make the decision after the Greek government extended its ban on flights from the UK until July 15.

But this afternoon holidaymakers were hit by a fresh blow when easyJet announced that it was preparing to axe 727 pilots and permanently close three major UK airport bases as part of a huge restructuring following the global coronavirus pandemic.

Almost 1-in-three pilot jobs are at risk as easyJet looks to close its Stansted, Southend and Newcastle airport bases.

This will lead to further flight cancellations for millions of customers along with changes to departure airports.

However, the low-cost airline has said that the proposals are to close the bases at the end of August which means summer holiday flights won't be affected.

A spokesperson said: “These airports remain important network points for us and we will still continue to serve them as destinations as part of our wider network.”

It's understood that if a decision is made to close the bases following consultation then customers will be contacted directly with any changes.

They will be explained their options and those who have their flights cancelled  will be able to transfer to an alternative flight free of charge, receive a voucher or apply for a refund.

The restructuring comes a month after the low-cost carrier warned it may need to reduce staff numbers by up to 30%, to help "optimise its network and bases as a result of the crisis".

Johan Lundgren, easyJet CEO, said: "These are very difficult proposals to put forward in what is an unprecedented and difficult time for the airline and the industry as a whole.

"We are focused on doing what is right for the company and its long term health and success so we can protect jobs going forward."
