EasyJet customer questions 'rip off' price hike ahead of Grand National 2019

With the Grand National Festival just a day away, Liverpool is expected set to see an influx of visitors arriving this week.

Visitors from across the UK head to Aintree racecourse each year to enjoy the three-day racing festival - but this year it looks like it could be a more expensive trip for some.

Twitter user Chris Maguire took to social media to comment on the significant price hike EasyJet has put in place this weekend.

Chris posted two images, of EasyJet prices from Liverpool to Belfast on Sunday, April 7 and next week, on Sunday, April 14 and said: Anyone else think @easyjet are trying to rip off people going to #GrandNational2019 with flights over £400 trying to get home to Belfast?

“Just because theirs (sic) high demand doesn't mean you should take advantage”.

He also tagged Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson.

EasyJet responded to Chris’ comments with: "When it's busy many people book flights at the same time which results in the price of your flight going up during your booking, this is called dynamic pricing.

“We use a live pricing system which means the prices of our flights will fluctuate for more popular flights."

Chris then hit back, asking "How long does that last? Hours/days/weeks? If no one has booked for a specified amount of time does it go back down? Or does it stay at 4.5x the usual cost after its risen?"

EasyJet then revealed that prices could remain high, replying: “It depends on how popular the flights are Chris, as I said, the prices do fluctuate which means there is the possibility that the price could go down, however, this may not happen.”

A spokesperson for EasyJet said: “As with all airlines, our pricing is demand-led, which means that as more seats are booked on a flight the price will rise so our fares start low and increase the closer it is to the date of departure.”

“We do not artificially increase ticket prices around sporting events, prices are led by a strong demand for some flights due to convenient scheduled flight times.

“We believe our fares remain competitive in comparison to other airlines flying around the same time.”
