EasyJet cancels flights as holiday destinations ban Brits amid soaring Covid cases

EasyJet have cancelled flights as the UK's increasing Covid cases triggered the reintroduction of travel bans.

Officials in Morocco today announced that flights to and from Britain will be halted from Thursday due to the soaring case in Britain.

Cases have been above 40,000 for seven days in a row, according to government data.

On Tuesday, 43,738 new infections were reported, sparking fears of a return of restrictions with winter looming.

EasyJet today cancelled flights to and from the Morocco which were due to depart tomorrow.

Morocco will also ban planes arriving from Germany and the Netherlands.

The Independent say the airline has told passengers: “We’re sorry that your flight has been cancelled.

“We have been advised of a change of regulation that affects flights from UK arriving into Morocco.

"The regulation comes into effect from tomorrow 21 October 2021, however as we’ll be unable to fly to Morocco in order to operate any return flights after today, we’ve taken the decision to cancel your flight with us today.”

The foreign office is currently telling travellers: "The Moroccan Government has announced the suspension for an unspecified period of direct flights between Morocco and the UK (and Germany and The Netherlands) with effect from midnight 20 October.

"Travellers affected by flight cancellations should contact their airline or tour operator for advice on alternative routes via third countries (eg France, Spain) where flights are operating as normal."

Moroccan airline Royal Air Maroc also said in a statement: "According to the decision of the competent authorities, and due to the development of the epidemiological situation, flights to/from Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have been suspended, starting today, October 20, at 11:59 pm."

It comes as some health leaders have warned Covid restrictions must immediately be reintroduced if England is to avoid "stumbling into a winter crisis".

The number of patients in hospital rose by 10 per cent in a week to 7,749 on Monday.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said it was not time for Plan B yet.

Downing Street said that they would continue to monitor the data but added that vaccinations had broken the link between cases, hospital admissions and deaths.

"Our focus remains on ensuring we get boosters out to those who are eligible," a No 10 spokesman said.

But Matthew Taylor, head of the NHS Confederation urged the government to roll out Plan B to avoid hospitals becoming overwhelmed.

"The health service is right at the edge," he warned.
