Easy 20p coin trick to check tyres that can help drivers save on fuel costs

Drivers are still being dealt an extra blow on top of the rising cost of living as prices at the pump remain high.

The RAC criticised the major supermarkets earlier this week over the prices, saying that falling wholesale costs are not being reflected in customers’ pockets. The motoring organisation claimed that the gap between wholesale and pump prices is now wider than it has been for a decade.

Given the high prices, many motorists are on the lookout for ways to save on their fuel. And there is one simple hack that they can try today - as long as they have a spare 20p in their pocket, The Express reports .

According to Kwik Fit, your car’s tyres account for up to 20% of how much fuel your vehicle uses. Tyres lose air naturally, at a rate of up to two PSI (pounds per square inch) each month. But low pressure in your tyres can cause them to become distorted - meaning that your car has to use up more fuel in order to keep running smoothly, due to the added friction while driving that is caused by misshapen tyres.

Ensuring that you keep your tyres topped up can improve fuel efficiency, as it means there is less rolling resistance on the road. Not only can it save you cash, but it’s also the law : current UK regulation states that tyre tread on cars must be at a minimum of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around its entire circumference.

You can check whether your car needs its tyres topping up by placing a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is still visible when you insert it, then it could mean your tyres are below the legal limit and you should get them checked by a professional.

If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured during the test, your tyre tread is above the legal limit. Drivers are advised to check their tyres at least once a month.
