Eastriggs teenager to donate 24 inches of hair to Little Princess Trust

Caring teenager Murren Mackay is donating 24 inches of hair to the Little Princess Trust cancer charity.

And the 13-year-old from Eastriggs is also hoping to raise £1,000 for the children’s ward at Dumfries Infirmary by losing her long locks.

Murren, who has been treated at the hospital for type one diabetes, said: “I am not nervous about it as I wanted to do it for a long time.

“My friends at school are all very supportive about it and I can’t wait to donate my hair and raise money for the children’s ward at the same time.”

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer.

With the help of her parents, Murren has created a fundraising page.

She was aiming to raise £500 for the DGRI children’s ward but the target was quickly reached and she now hopes to double that amount.

Murren’s dad, Mark, said: “My wife and I are very proud of our daughter. She chose to donate to the children’s ward as they have done so much for her since she was diagnosed with type one diabetes more than three years ago. She spent five days at the hospital and the nurses and staff were fantastic with us.

“The ward offers the children as much to do while they stay there as possible, from colouring in, puzzles, and a break-out room where they can socialise but as with everything this costs money and maintenance.

“Murren would like to be able to give the money raised for the ward to be able to buy new items for the children in their care and to update some of the games available to them for the consoles they provide.

“This means that the children can escape whatever ails them for just a little while and allow them to be children.”
