Easton voted one of the top 50 coolest neighbourhoods in the world by Time Out

Easton has triumphed above the likes of Clifton and Bedminster to be named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.

A list compiled by Time Out draws on a survey of more than 27,000 people from around the world.

Local writers were asked to name where trendy new venues were opening in their cities and also where visitors could experience the best up-and-coming culture.

Their research resulted in a countdown of 50 must-see but often lesser-known neighbourhoods across the world, with Bristol's very own Easton coming in at an impressive 35th.

Arroios in Lisbon topped the list and was followed by Shimokitazawa in Tokyo, Onikan in Lagos, Wedding in Berlin and Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles.

Peckham in London, Ancoats in Manchester and Kelvinbridge in Glasgow were the other UK neighbourhoods which joined Easton on the list.

Why Easton is so cool

According to Time Out, Easton ranks highly for its "globe-spanning food and drink, plethora of community projects and genuinely neighbourly atmosphere".

Time Out says: "This ever-evolving suburb, a half-hour wander away from the centre of Bristol, is a chilled and friendly haven for hip young families, alternative-leaning young professionals and indie business owners alike.

"Although it’s only a ten-minute train ride from plush, leafy Clifton, Easton couldn’t be more different, drawing its charm from an authentically messy melding of many cultures.

"Cuisines of all kinds line the main high street of Stapleton Road, while cosy and colourful St Marks Road has a villagey feel with its trendy pizza joint, peaceful church grounds, ornate mosque and celebrated international food shop, Sweet Mart."

What Easton residents say

Easton's St Marks Road reflects the diverse mix of cultures thriving in the community for many residents. Earlier this year, to find out why they love it.

There's a range of cafes, restaurants, a great pub, a fabulous bakery, a church, a mosque and even a bookies.

One of the first places to give the street its reputation was the Bristol Sweetmart.

Established in 1978 by the late Mr Kassam Majothi, a Ugandan refugee who emigrated to the UK during the reign of Idi Amin.

Now run by his five sons, the shop brings people from all across the area for a range of exotic fruits, vegetables, spices, and its unique deli.

One of the brothers Saleem Ismail said: “We have been on the street for 40 years and seen lots of comings and goings.

"It’s a great street, and well known for its choice of food, and it’s festivals.

"It’s like an Aladdin's cave.

“It has a bigger reputation outside the city than people realise. We have had people like Ainsley Harriett, Jeremy Corbyn, and the Bristol Mayor all coming to visit us."
