Easton man jailed for assaulting emergency worker

An Easton man told to get a lawyer or face the consequences has been jailed.

Matthew Pocock, 39, of Stapleton Road, was due to be sentenced for assault on July 23 at Bristol Crown Court.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of assaulting an emergency worker as well as using racially aggravated words and behaviour and damaging property on May 9.

The case had been adjourned from July 7 to allow him to find legal representation.

But when he appeared via video link on July 23, from HMP Bristol, he told Judge James Patrick his mum had been speaking to someone and they were supposed to be booking a visit to see.

Judge Patrick asked him: "This is unacceptable, who is she speaking to?"

Pocock replied: "I don't know."

The judge told him: "I am adjourning the case.

"If you have a lawyer, good.

"If not you will be doing it yourself.

"If there is nobody here I will sentence you, is that clear?

"You will have to get in touch with your mother to make sure there's someone here representing you."

Today (July 31) Pocock appeared before the court and was still unrepresented.

He was jailed for a total of nine months.
