Why Eastern Michigan Will Win
Is the Coastal Carolina defense going to be appreciably better and stronger right away? It had a nightmare of a time in Sun Belt play, it struggled to force turnovers, and it had way too many problems against the run. It’s up to Eastern Michigan to pound away.
The Eagles didn’t have enough of a ground game last season, but it has the parts in the backfield to start doing a whole lot more. It’ll be the speed and experience of the receiving corps that should make the biggest difference – the EMU midrange passing game should keep the offense moving. However …
Why Coastal Carolina Will Win
The Eastern Michigan defensive front is all but starting over. Oakland Raider Maxx Crosby is done, the top linebackers are gone, and the pass rush has to emerge from somewhere.
New head coach Jamey Chadwell knows how to get an offense moving, and this group should be able to get the ground attack going with a running back by committee aspect that should be able to control the clock and the tempo. It’s a new staff and a new offense, but the Chanticleers should be among the Sun Belt’s best teams in time of possession again.
What’s Going To Happen
These are two good, sound teams with two good, sound coaching staffs – and two rebuilding jobs.
The Eagle defense that led the MAC last season will still be solid despite all of the key losses, and the offense will be a whole lot better than Coastal Carolina’s. The Chanticleer O won’t be consistent enough.
