Easter Sunday Orange walks in Glasgow could be rerouted by council over sectarian abuse fears

The Orange march set to pass by two Catholic churches in Glasgow on Easter Sunday could be rerouted over sectarian abuse fears.

Police Scotland has raised no objections to the route, which usually goes past St Alphonsus and St Mary’s in the city centre, however the council could step in due to "exceptional circumstances".

The development comes on the back of an attack on a parish priest last year.

A total of 80 letters of concern were submitted to the local authority from members of the public and parishioners of St Alphonsus, where Father Thomas White was based when he was spat at.

The Scottish Sun reported the letters mostly revolved around fears the event would “inflame tensions and fears in the local community” with the churches expected to be full for Easter Sunday.

But Police Scotland raised no objections to the The Apprentice Boys of Derry (Bridgeton) marching.

A council spokesman told  The Times : “Officers have consulted with Police Scotland; which advised the council it has no significant concerns regarding public order, safety, damage to property or disruption to the life of the community as a consequence of the notified procession on Easter Sunday.

“However, in recognition of the exceptional circumstances surrounding this particular event, including the significance of the date to all Christian faiths, the council is satisfied it requires further information and discussion.”

Councillors will now vote this week on whether the march should be re-routed.

The Times reported that a joint letter by parishioners states: “An anti-Catholic organisation marching passed the churches will absolutely result in intimidation, fear and disruption to these celebrations.”
