Easter Sunday Orange march re-routed by council over sectarian abuse concerns

The Orange march due to take place on Easter Sunday will no longer pass by two Catholic churches in Glasgow following a Glasgow City Council vote.

A unanimous decision was made by councillors at a Public Processions Committee today (Tuesday) to re-route the walk, which usually goes past St Alphonsus and St Mary’s in the city centre.

The decision comes on the back of an attack on a parish priest last year, when Father Thomas White of St Alphonsus was spat at outside the church.

A total of 80 letters of concern were submitted to the council from members of the public and parishioners of the church.

Although Police Scotland raised no objections to the The Apprentice Boys of Derry (Bridgeton) marching, councillors decided to re-route the walk.

A report published prior to the meeting recommended that the Orange walk continue to go ahead, but that councillors consider various options, which included re-routing the walk and a requirement for the walk to assemble in Tullis Street at 9.30am, begin at 9.45am and return from Cathedral Square at 12.15pm.
