Easter Sunday loyalist march in Glasgow cancelled after council force re-route

A loyalist group have cancelled an Easter Sunday march through the streets of Glasgow after it was re-routed away from a Catholic Church .

Earlier this week councillors from Glasgow City Council took the decision to force the Apprentice Boys of Derry (Bridgeton) away from St Alphonsus Church and St Mary’s.

Father Thomas White was spat on outside St Alphonsus when a loyalist parade walked past there on July 7 last year.

Now the request to parade on Sunday has been withdrawn, according to the council website.

The Glasgow City Council website states the march has been withdrawn (Glasgow City Council)

Loyalist parade re-routed away from Glasgow church where priest was spat on

Ahead of the meeting on Tuesday Police Scotland had warned of potential for significant disorder if the walk went past the church.

The council re-routed the procession, which would have went from Tullis Street to Cathedral Square and back, away from the church.

Bradley Wallace, left, was jailed for spitting on Catholic priest Father Thomas White (UGC)

After Father White was targeted, Bradley Wallace was jailed for ten months in February after admitting assaulting the priest - a charge aggravated by religious prejudice.

Call It Out, a group who campaigns against anti-Catholic bigotry and anti-Irish racism in Scotland, welcomed the Apprentice Boys decision to cancel the march.

A Twitter post read: "We note that the Apprentice Boys of Derry have cancelled their planned march on Easter Sunday after @ GlasgowCC re-routed it away from Catholic churches.

"This underlines what we have always said: these marches are anti-Catholic and the purpose of them is to intimidate Catholics."
