Things to do with the family at Easter 2022 across Greater Manchester

It's the time again - the Easter holidays are almost here and that means keeping the kids busy and happy for two weeks.

It's quite a task for parents, but never fear, help is at hand. We've been scouring the area for some of the best Easter events and attractions open to all the family over the holiday period and brought them together below.

There are egg hunts, farm visits and everything in between. We've tried to choose mainly long-running activities taking place across the holidays, but there are some one-off events and some running across the long Easter weekend too.

Manchester

Fairy Tales, Z-arts

An interactive experience based on some much-loved children's stories is coming to Manchester and launches just in time for the school holidays.

After a sell-out run at the Discover Children’s Story Centre in London, Fairy Tales arrives at Z-arts from April 5.

The new event will feature 'some of the most-loved and recognisable characters from fairy stories around the world'.

Perfect for children from babies to eight-year-olds, the interactive experience promises to transport visitors 'into the magical world of The Three Bears, Jack and his Beanstalk, the spider Anansi, and many more'.

Families are invited to dress up as fairy tale characters as they follow the trail of breadcrumbs through the story town, exploring nine well-loved tales that originate from England, France, Germany, Ghana and Norway.

Each interactive section includes a number of different activities including the chance to build your own house with a choice of materials at the Little Pigs Builder’s Yard, challenge the hapless Jack to a game of beans in the market or try a delicious meal at Hansel and Gretel’s café.

Tickets - £8 per person and £3 for babes in arms - can be booked now until the end of July, with those for later in the run being released at a later date.

Fairy Tales at Z-arts (Fairy Tales / Discover Children's Story Centre)

Alice in Wonderland Easter Experience, Wythenshawe Park

Families are invited to 'jump down the rabbit hole this Easter and discover an exquisitely exciting family adventure' at an Alice in Wonderland experience.

Set within Wythenshawe Hall Gardens for one day only, on April 18, visitors are encouraged to dress-up and join the fun as the much-loved adventure comes to life.

The idea is that Alice and her friends have escaped from the pages of Lewis Carroll’s marvellous tale, and 'the enchanted world of Wonderland has mysteriously sprung into the Hall’s Gardens'.

"There’s Alice, Queen of Hearts, Absolem the Caterpillar and of course the Rabbit" at the event, organised by Sneaky Experience.

Early bird tickets cost £10.50 for adults and £12.50 for children and can be booked online, under twos go free. There’s an Easter egg included with every full-paying child ticket.

Science and Industry Museum

The whole family can get creative at the Science and Industry Museum discovering inspiring innovations, creating clever contraptions and getting stuck into construction-themed activities.

Running from April 2 to 18, the much-loved attraction is celebrating 'Manchester Firsts' and world-changing ideas.

Families are invited to explore the city's revolutionary heritage and the cutting-edge science happening here today with hands-on activities and live science shows.

Visitors can build their own fun in the brand-new Mega Makers indoor playground (daily at 11.30am to 1pm and 2.15pm to 3.40pm. Stack and connect large foam cubes, bricks, cogs, curves and cylinders to see what creations you can make inspired by the building work currently happening to restore and transform the historic site.

There's loads more to get involved with too, from the various Science Stops around the museum and the newly revamped Experiment gallery, to the Construction Packs that under fives can borrow, containing a high-vis jacket, hard hat and wooden tools.

Kids can also settle down for story time (daily at 10.30am to 11am and 1.30pm to 2pm) with the Explainer team as they enter the world of Izzy Gizmo, a girl who loves to invent.

Easter Treetop Trail at Treetop Nets, Heaton Park

Families are invited to hop over to Treetop Nets at Heaton Park during the school holidays for 'a cracking Easter hunt with a difference'.

Manchester’s high ropes treetop adventure, ‘Treetop Nets’ is taking the Easter hunt to a whole new level with an energetic aerial egg hunt in the high trees, ditching chocolate eggs as prizes in favour of a greener alternative, ‘Treebombs’.

All visitors to Treetop Nets will be invited to take part in the exciting Easter Treetop Trail, which runs from April 1 to 19, where kids can run free on the giant aerial trampolines while searching for the 20 wooden Easter bunnies that are hidden up among the trees.

Once all 20 bunnies are found, children will be rewarded with a unique ‘Treebomb’ prize to take home, each containing hundreds of native Alder and Maple tree seeds.

The Easter hunt is included in the ticket price - £20 for two hours, £13 for supervisors and under fives. Anyone over the age of three can take part, with full supervision required for under fives. Book online.

Afrocats and more, The Whitworth

Join Afrocats this half term as they take over The Whitworth once again.

Afrocats, an award-winning charity, is back with cultural and creative movement activities and arts and crafts workshops for children, young people and families.

During Easter, they'll be at the gallery offering arts, crafts, dancing and singing on Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 April.

Beauty and the Beast, Palace Theatre

If you fancy a trip to the theatre this Easter then there are still some tickets left for the much-anticipated Beauty and the Beast coming to the Palace Theatre.

The show is heading to Manchester for an epic nine-week run starting on March 31 and running right through until Saturday, June 4.

The musical, based on Disney's hit 1991 animated movie, boasts the best-loved songs from the film like Be Our Guest, Gaston and of course the title track Beauty and the Beast.

Disney say the new musical tour has been re-imagined and re-designed in a completely new production staged by members of the original award-winning creative team.

Salford

The Giant Egg Hunt, RHS Bridgewater

Families will be able to hunt for the colourful giant eggs in a trail at RHS Bridgewater this Easter.

A 'supersized family adventure' is promised in the garden 'as some larger-than-life hand-painted eggs await discovery'.

The Giant Egg Hunt will be running at the attraction, in Worsley, Salford, throughout the school holidays, from Saturday, April 2 until Easter Monday - April 18.

Visitors will be given an explorer pack, with details of the trail, as well as fun puzzles to solve and plants and wildlife to spot along the way.

Explorers of all ages are invited to take part, with every child who successfully finds all the hidden eggs being rewarded with a free chocolate treat from PLAYin CHOC to take home.

Feel Your Fears, I'm A Celebrity Jungle Challenge, Quayside

There's a brand new challenge for families to take on at the I'm A Celebrity Jungle Challenge this Easter.

Families are invited to test their senses as they encounter darkness and guess the gruesome objects hidden inside the little boxes of horror. Guess the contents correctly and you’ll be rewarded with bonus stars.

Feel Your Fears comprises of five different boxes with objects inside. Each player must be blindfolded and put their hands inside to identify the hidden objects. For each object guessed correctly, the player wins one star - but, of course, there is a twist! Each item is encased in a different, gruesome substance 'putting both fear and senses to the ultimate test'.

The event is running across the holidays at the Quayside attraction from April 2 until April 24.

Easter Bunny Hunt and more at Ordsall Hall, Salford

Ordsall Hall is a large former manor house in Ordsall, Salford, and there are loads of events going on over the holidays.

From April 3 to 17 (Sunday to Thursday) families can have a go at the Easter Bunny Hunt. Find the eight rabbits hidden around Ordsall Hall and gardens - each of them representing part of the venue's history. The trail costs £2 and tickets must be booked online.

Other events include Tudor Playtime - looking at the toys from the time and comparing them with the toys of today, Meet a Servant - where you can out their busy lifestyle and make a scent bag to take home, and an Easter Egg Plant Pots session.

The Smeds and The Smoos, The Lowry

There's some theatre for the little ones at The Lowry this Easter.

An adaptation of the award-winning book The Smeds and The Smoos, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is coming to the venue from April 12 until 16.

On a far-off planet, Smeds and Smoos can’t be friends. So when a young Smed and Smoo fall in love and zoom off into space together, how will their families get them back?

Trafford

Easter egg hunt, Dino Falls Adventure Golf

Families can enjoy an Easter egg hunt while doing a spot of adventure golf at Dino Falls this April.

Head out on the courses to 'eggs-pose the hidden word' and claim a free chocolate treat.

The attraction, near the Trafford Centre, features a Rapids course and a Volcano course, with its own six-metre walk-through spouting volcano.

It's the biggest adventure golf venue outside of London and features everything from a Tyrannosaurus Rex and baby Triceratops to Velociraptors and a Diplodocus.

The hunt is running from April 4 to 22 and the site is open daily from 7am to 10.30pm.

Tickets cost £9 for adults, £7 for under 16s, or £28 for a family of two adults and two children. Additional children £5 each. Tickets must be purchased to take part in the egg hunt. Book online.

Spring Escape, The Trafford Centre

A huge fairground is returning to The Trafford Centre for the Easter holidays.

The popular Jungle River log flume will be back at the site, which has hosted previous events including last year's Summer Social and Spookfest.

As well as vintage funfair with rides for kids of all ages, there'll be live musicians, a variety of food and drink and a brand new show Roar! from Gandeys Circus inside the Big Top.

The event runs from Friday, April 1 to Sunday, April 24, outside The Orient and you can book for a time slot at either 12pm to 2pm, 2pm to 4pm, 4pm to 6pm, or 6pm to 9pm.

Entry to the fairground costs £3.30 and rides operate on a token system, costing £1 per token, and ranging from two to five tokens per ride. You can get 25 tokens for price of 20 by booking online.

Tickets for Roar, which features an international cast of over 30 artistes and live musicians, need to be booked separately and cost from £56 for a family of four. Tickets for the opening night, April 1, are available from £9.99.

Ninjago at Legoland Discovery Centre Manchester

It's all about Team Ninja at Legoland this Easter.

Lego Ninjago is under threat and Master Wu needs more Ninjas than ever to help save it from the evil forces that threaten its very existence.

Young fans are encouraged to 'level up' their Ninja skills to master the six Ninja virtues - courage, balance, honesty, generosity, curiosity and wisdom - with activities including the climbing wall, card trading and showing off their Ninja dance moves.

Running from April 2 to 24, children will earn a Ninja certificate and a virtual gift from Master Wu.

Plus, as part of the entry into the Lego Ninjago experience, guests can enjoy everything else within the Legoland Discovery Centre, including the rides, Lego play zones and more.

Easter Garden, Trafford Palazzo

As well as Legoland, there's a fortnight of fun planned at Trafford Palazzo over the school break.

Its Easter Garden celebrations are kicking off on April 2 with an Easter Egg Hunt. Youngsters will be given the mission to find the Trafford Palazzo ‘Golden Egg’ which will be hidden within the mall. Egg hunters will follow a trail of clues to find the egg and be rewarded with a treat should they succeed.

There'll be face painting and golf activities throughout the launch weekend followed by an Easter themed golf course open noon til 5pm on April 7 to 10.

Over the weekend of April 9 and 10, Kate’s Crafts will also be back delivering Easter Craft workshops for children to enjoy throughout the day.

The on April 13 and 14, there'll be a fun-packed two-day event of The Egg Games, with mini games and fun for all the family. Find out more on the website here.

Trafford Treetop Adventures

The treetop adventure outside the Trafford Centre is open over the school break.

Tucked away at the side of the Regent Crescent car park at the former Debenhams end of the mall, there are two courses to complete - one higher and longer than the other - and you get to do both within the £14.97 ticket price.

Billed as 'the ultimate test of coordination, balance and determination', you'll need a head for heights to swing, climb and hop your way through the courses.

Minimum age for the course is six, but children under 1.4m (4ft7) must be accompanied by an adult.

Peter Rabbit Breakfast at Dobbies

This Easter garden centre Dobbies has partnered with The World of Peter Rabbit to celebrate the iconic bunny’s 120th birthday with an exclusive Peter Rabbit Easter Breakfast.

Tickets are now on sale for the themed celebratory breakfast, which takes place in Marple (and the Dobbies in Altrincham) between April 14 and 18.

Attendees will take part in a wide range of family-friendly gardening activities plus receive a Peter Rabbit gift to take home.

In addition, there will be a great range of breakfast options, including a traditional cooked breakfast or a vegetarian cooked breakfast. For an alternative option, children can enjoy a portion of cheesy beans on toast.

Easter at Reddish Vale Farm

A full day of fun is promised for families visiting Reddish Vale Farm this Easter.

The popular egg hunt is back so visitors can grab a basket from the Easter Event Barn and head to the Easter Village where each child needs to find four of the same coloured eggs and return them to claim their own Easter egg.

Families can feed all the outdoor animals, cuddle the guinea pigs and rabbits and meet the baby animals.

There's a huge outdoor adventure play area with zip wires, giant bouncing pillows, a beach area and lots more.

Adventures with Peter Rabbit, The Hive, Moss Bank Park

Peter Rabbit is making another appearance over in Bolton, but you'll have to be quick to get your hands on tickets.

Adventures with Peter Rabbit events are running at Moss Bank Park this Easter.

It's the character's first ever visit to The Hive, where little ones will be able to complete some challenges before meeting the cheeky rabbit himself.

The events are taking place on Sunday, April 3 and Saturday, April 9, but there are only limited time slots left.

Armed with their trail sheet, children will set out to explore the hive and help find Jemima Puddle-ducks lost egg on a trail of discovery.

They will visit Mr McGregor’s garden where a muddy challenge awaits them and then head to the bush craft area for stories around the campfire before marshmallow toasting over the burning embers.

Plus, all ticket holders will have the chance to take part in Mr McGregor’s sunflower challenge. And because Easter is almost here, Peter Rabbit will have a chocolate treat at hand for all the children that help him.

Easter at Smithills Open Farm

There'll be fun on the farm at Smithills this Easter, which is hosting its own egg hunt events.

Families need to book online to visit the farm then add on their Easter Egg Hunt tickets separately.

Every child will get the opportunity to hunt for special rubber eggs then exchange them for an Easter egg or an Easter teddy bear. Each day on each hunt their will be 'egg-stra prizes and chocolates to hunt for', plus plenty of picture opportunities with the Easter bunnies and chicks.

There's lots more for visitors to see and do too including meeting the animals and enjoying a tractor ride. And it's hoped the brand new outdoor play area, which has been months in the making, will be ready just in time for the school break too.

Easter Break at Lancaster Park and Animal Farm

There's lots more fun on the farm at Lancaster Park this Easter with baby chicks, lambs and more.

As well as the chance to see all the animals - feeding some on the Nature Walk and getting close to others in the Petting barn - activities include the caterpillar barrel ride, mini quads and Digger Corner.

It's opening daily 9am to 4.30pm for the event, which runs from April 11 to 24. Tickets, costing £6 each (free for under 12 months) can be booked online. Lamb feeding costs £3 a bottle and can be bought on the day.

The Jungle Book, Oldham Coliseum

There's more theatre on offer at Oldham Coliseum this Easter with a musical adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s famous story The Jungle Book.

First programmed for Spring 2020, The Jungle Book was in rehearsals when theatres across the UK closed their doors on March 16 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, and is billed as 'the perfect Easter treat for the whole family'.

Performed by a cast of seven talented actors, it's the first family show the Coliseum has produced outside of the festive season for over a decade and explores the universal themes of family, belonging and identity.

It's running from April 7 until 24 and tickets, costing from £7, can be booked online.

Bury Transport Museum

Just across the road from East Lancashire Railway's Bury Bolton Street Station is Bury Transport Museum and it's reopening in time for the Easter holidays.

The industrial heritage of the North West is brought to life through stunningly restored vehicles, original artefacts and interactive exhibits, families can explore the lives and jobs of people in the early 20th Century.

There is plenty to keep both adults and children entertained, from discovering the horse drawn tram that was once a chip shop, learning about how 'Hilda' the steam roller almost met her end, meeting the bus with a history in movies or taking a look around the smallest museum inside of a museum in the UK.

Easter Eggstravaganza, Cockfields Farm, Ashton

An Easter Eggstravaganza is planned at Cockfields Farm over the holidays.

Running from April 9 to 18, it's the first springtime the farm has been able to welcome visitors in two years so bosses are going all out to make it a fun event.

Visitors can join Sherbert and Sharon in the Sheepish Showtime Easter Pantomime, join in the Huge Easter Egg Hunt with Chick Astley and collect four eggs from around the Easter garden, along with any chocolate or toys they find along the way.

Exchange the four eggs for a chocolatey treat from Rabbit De Niro in the Egg Factory.

There'll be baby chicks, baby lambs, the chance to cuddle the bunnies and guinea pigs and lots more.

All the usual fun of the farm will be on offer too including tractor rides, duck pond nature walk, role play area and outdoor play area with the giant jumping pillow.

Tickets cost £22 for children including a FREE build a bunny teddy bear for the first 500 children to book. Adults £13, under ones not participating £3. Visit the website to book.

Easter Eggstravaganza, Cockfields Farm (Manchester Evening News)

Fun Day, Stamford Park


Stamford Park is hosting its annual fun day on Sunday, April 24 and is promising 'something for all the family'.

There will be lots of mostly free entertainment such as face painting, balloon modelling, birds of prey, crafts, a climbing wall, music and walkabout acts and visitors can make the most of the facilities including the water feature, the boating lake, the aviary and the Highfield Pavilion café.

Transport for Greater Manchester will be on hand to provide advice on walking and cycling routes, cycle training and maintenance courses. You can also take your bike along for a MOT and TfGM’s Dr Bike mechanic will fix any minor repairs.

Pets don’t miss out, either. There’s a fun dog show with lots of classes including waggiest tail and best biscuit catcher. Entry is £2 per class and registration takes place from noon with the RSPCA show starting at 1pm.

The fun day is running from noon to 4pm. As parking is limited near Stamford Park, visitors are encouraged to travel in by public transport.

Make Do and Play, Portland Basin

After a two-year gap caused by Covid, Portland Basin’s artist-led Make, Do and Play family activity sessions are returning for the Easter school holidays.

The Ashton museum is offering 'eggtastic days' out on Tuesdays, April 12 and 19, and Thursdays, April 14 and 21, all with a special Easter theme. There will also be free self-led craft activities during the two-week break.

Make, Do and Play workshops cost £1.25 each and are suitable for all ages.

Wigan

Easter Adventure Trail, Haigh Woodland Park

There's a special treat in store at Haigh Woodland Park with an interactive theatre trail.

You and your family will embark on a hour-long adventure. With the help of your guide, the trusty Easter chick, it's your job to stop Easter from being cancelled.

You'll find some other characters within the woodlands and gardens and you'll be finding clues, solving riddles and puzzles along the way, before hopefully meeting the Easter Bunny himself.

The event is running from April 15 to 18 at various times and tickets cost £6 each, plus booking fees. Order online here.

Easter Weekend at Lancashire Mining Museum

There's lots of fun planned at Astley Green Colliery's mining museum on the Saturday of Easter weekend.

The three-hour event is running from 1pm until 4pm on April 16 and will include Easter egg hunts, cream teas and the chance to take a ride on the train, which launched last summer.

Rochdale

Easter Trail, Fireground

Little ones are invited to join an Easter Trail at Fireground this April.

The new Fireground replaced the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum in Rochdale's old fire station last year and officially launched in January.

As well as fully restored fire engines, historic horse-drawn fire carriages and manual hand-operated pumps, there's an immersive Victorian street scene and a scene from the blitz, complete with lighting and sound effects.

But perhaps the best bit for little ones is the many interactive display elements, including a play area with a fireman's pole to slide down.

The trail is taking place over two dates in the holidays - Thursday, April 14 and Saturday, April 16.

Cheshire and elsewhere

Easter Egg Hunt, Kenyon Hall Farm, Warrington

Following a two-year break due to Covid the popular Easter Egg Hunt is back at Kenyon Hall Farm this year.

Families are invited to follow the clues to find the eggs hidden around the farm. The event is suitable for walking-aged children aged around 2 to 11 and takes around 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

Tickets cost £3 per child, with supervising adults and non-participating infants (under 12 months) free. All participating children receive a small Easter treat at the end. Book online.

Easter Egg Hunt at Kenyon Hall Farm (Manchester Evening News)

Lambing Week / Magical Easter Adventure, Tatton Park

If you're hoping for the chance to see some cute little lambs this Easter then you can't go wrong with Tatton Park.

It's lambing week at the farm from April 2 to 10, when Farm staff share their expertise with visitors, giving informative talks at the lambing shed. Learn how they spot the signs of lambing and how they look after sheep and care for lambs during this extra special time.

Then over Easter weekend there's lots more fun on offer with the Magical Easter Adventures event.

It promises that families will be 'spoilt for choice with treasure hunt-style trails in the gardens, mansion, farm and parkland'.

"Expect to help mythical creatures, meet magical beings and receive chocolate rewards on your adventures."

Events include A Knight's Quest in the Mansion, Easter fun in the Gardens, a Magical Unicorn Trail at the Farm and a Terrible Troll Trail in the parkland.

Storytelling Pop-up, Chester Zoo

There's loads of fun happening at Chester Zoo over the Easter break.

From story telling and animal puppet workshops, to Animal Moves sessions - learning to leap like a lemur, prowl like a jaguar and slither like a snake - there are different activities running over different dates.

Storytelling Pop-up is running from April 2 to May 2 and events are included with usual admission fees - adults £29.08, children £22.72, twos and under free.

Totally Roarsome, Cheshire

An outdoor woodland trail featuring all kinds of dinosaur is running throughout the Easter holidays.

Totally Roarsome, at Arley Hall in Cheshire, features more than 200 individual models making up the trail, which is aimed at families with primary school children.

Little ones can get up close to the raptors, brontosaurus, spinosaurus, woolly mammoth, triceratops and stegosaurus.

And there are all kinds of other creatures and animals to keep them company, from sea creatures and unicorns, to aliens and farm animals.

On entry, families are given a quiz sheet, featuring different levels of questions aimed at different age groups and the answers are on the fact boards as you make your way around.

The event is running daily from April 2 until 24. Tickets, costing £8.95 each (under twos free), can be booked online. Entry price includes a free group photo to take home.

Superworm trail at Delamere Forest

The Superworm family activity trail is running at Delamere Forest over the holidays.

The trail is based on the children’s picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler and follows the premiere of the popular animation which aired on Christmas Day.

From the creators of The Gruffalo, the Superworm story has been brought to 26 forests across England, with the other closest ones being Gisburn Forest in Lancashire, Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter in Cumbria, and North Yorkshire's Dalby and Guisborough forests.

For £3.50, families can buy an activity pack featuring a forest superhero mask, a paper bag to colour in, seven creature fact cards, an activity sheet, stickers, a pencil and crayon, and the trail leaflet.

It's the latest partnership between Forestry England and Magic Light Pictures, with the trail aiming to showcase 'the unsung heroes of the forest' by highlighting the small but mighty creatures in the Superworm story, such as toad, beetle and Wizard Lizard, and shows their amazing abilities as they make their home in the forest.

The trail should keep little ones entertained for about an hour, leaving time to explore the rest of the forest, which is also home to Gruffalo characters mouse, snake, fox, owl and squirrel.
