Easter Bunny is a key worker and is not self-isolating

The Easter Bunny is a key worker and is not self-isolating, meaning he will be able to visit children around the world on Easter morning.

Each year the rabbit travels across the globe delivering Easter eggs to children and in some houses leaving a trail of eggs hidden to find.

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, has now confirmed that the rabbit is a key worker and will therefore be able to visit homes.

She also made it clear that, because of current circumstances, he may have difficulty reaching some locations so children should not be disappointed if he doesn't arrive.

She made the announcement during New Zealand's daily press briefing.

The "Easter Hare" originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behaviour at the start of the season of Eastertide in Germany.

The creature carries coloured eggs in his basket, candy, and sometimes also toys to the homes of children, and as such shows similarities to Santa Claus or the Christkind, as they both bring gifts to children on the night before their respective holidays.

The custom was first mentioned in Georg Franck von Franckenau's De ovis paschalibus in 1682, referring to a German tradition of an Easter Hare bringing Easter eggs for the children.
