Easter appeal launched to help countries devastated by Cyclone Idai

An Easter appeal has been launched to help countries devastated by Cyclone Idai.

Humanitarian aid organisation GOAL has asked for vital funds to support its emergency response operations in Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique following the horrific damage left by the cyclone.

The death toll is estimated at 1,000 across the three countries with many more missing.

Fiona Gannon, GOAL’s Head of Programmes, said: “Cyclone Idai has caused huge devastation and flooding across Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

“Four weeks after it first hit millions of people are still in urgent need of humanitarian support, including shelter, clean water and food.

“For those already living in vulnerable situations, the impact of this disaster pushes them closer to the edge.”

Experts have raised concerns about the threat of water-borne diseases due to overcrowding in shelters, lack of hygiene, and contaminated water sources.

The cyclone has caused serious damage to infrastructure and fears have been raised about a potential food crisis after thousands of hectares of crop harvest failed.

Cyclone Idai has been described as one of the worst tropical cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere with countries being hit with powerful winds of 170 km/h.
