EastEnders 'will go off air' next month as BBC runs out of episodes

BBC soap EastEnders is poised to disappear from TV screens soon because the network may run out of episodes.

Episodes have already been cut down to just two shows a week as the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to filming and output was rationed.

It has been reported EastEnders will be taken off air next month as the number of episodes left is running low - but filming is scheduled to commence again at the end of June, MirrorOnline reports.

The BBC declined to comment.

A source told The Sun Online: "There will be a break for the soap next month.

"Everyone wants to get back to work of course but the health and safety of cast and crew is the most important thing. It will only happen when it can be done safely."

It comes after BBC director of content Charlotte Moore revealed that filming will resume by the end of next month.

She wrote in The Telegraph: "We've been looking very carefully at how we can safely put some of our shows back into production, and I'm pleased to announce that we plan to begin filming again on both EastEnders and Top Gear by the end of next month.

"Cast members will do their own hair and makeup. Social distancing measures will be in place."

The show's official Twitter account also confirmed the news.

It tweeted: "#EastEnders will resume filming at the end of June.

"Strict social distancing measures will be in place. We’ll be announcing more news soon..."

The cast reacted to the news, with Karen Taylor actress Lorraine Stanley replying: "I'd better stop eating the biscuits."

Over on Instagram, Jags Panesar actor Amar Adatia commented: "Absolutely buzzing to be back with the family."
