EastEnders viewers left baffled after noticing last-minute change to scene

EastEnders viewers were left racing to Twitter during the latest episode of the BBC soap, as a likely editing change caught them off guard.

Kathy Beale appeared to change her voice during one scene, and viewers couldn't work out what had happened.

The Beale matriarch was sharing her concern over son Ben Mitchell, after his operation was cancelled and he was in a bad place.

She was also trying to bring the family together amid the sixth anniversary of her granddaughter Lucy's death.

But during one scene, Kathy's usual voice sounded very different as she left the room.

There appeared to be an insert of automated dialogue replacement, ADR, during the particular scene.

Kathy's back was to the camera so it wouldn't really be known what was originally said, if anything at all.

While it was more than likely an editorial decision and a deliberate one, viewers were a little more intrigued by something else.

She had told son Ian: "Come on, this breakfast is important."

With no explanation for the change-up, many questioned what Kathy had said before for the editing being needed - with some wondering if it was down to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Others were simply caught out by the sudden change in voice, with it clear the moment had been recorded later and added in.

With filming halted on the soap and other shows due to COVID-19, episodes now only air twice a week instead of four times, so scenes are airing later than planned.

From Easter airing late to dates not matching up, all soaps have been affected - so perhaps it was something that would no longer be relevant.

One fan tweeted: "What the f**k happed to Kathy’s audio?"

Another said: "Did #EastEnders just do some WFH audio...come on this breakfast is important."

A third joked: "Why did Kathy speak in Google Translate?"

Meanwhile, as one viewer suggested it was down to Lucy's death anniversary, another wrote: "Did anyone else notice Kathy suddenly talk out a speakerphone?"

EastEnders airs Mondays at 8pm, and Tuesdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
