Eastenders viewers 'heartbroken' following the latest episode

Eastenders fans were left truly shocked by the events in its most recent episode.

During Thursday night's episode, viewers saw Whitney Dean - who is currently in prison before a murder trial - hallucinating about the abuse she was subject to as a child.

At the end of the episode, Whitney, who has been on hunger strike while behind bars, collapses leaving fans questioning whether she will survive the ordeal.

They were also subject to seeing Gray Atkins hailed a "hero" by fellow Albert Square residents but unbeknown to them, he had just beat his wife Chantelle leaving her struggling to get up off the floor.

This prompted a mix of reactions from fans of the BBC One soap.

Some likened the scenes to a horror movie and others were heartbroken at what they were seeing on screen.

"OMG with the Whitney story and the Gray and Chantelle storyline, this episode is like a horror film #Eastenders," tweeted one.

Another said: "Whitney and Chantelle are breaking my heart. I feel sick. Like I literally feel like I’m on the verge of vomiting. That was probably one of the best eps I’ve seen in a looong time, even if it did have me shaking like a leaf. Just...wow! #EastEnders"

"Get Whitney out of that cell and put Gray in there. Then throw away the key. The violence must stop. It's truly sickening #EastEnders," added a third.

A fourth said: "It's pretty disturbing to watch the Gray abuse of Chantelle. Brilliantly acted by both though. #Eastenders."

Viewers will have to wait until Monday night (March 16) to see the aftermath for both characters.

Tonight (Friday's) episode is cancelled as the big Sport Relief fundraiser takes over the BBC.
