EastEnders star says he 'thought he'd killed' stunt performer during fight scene

EastEndersstars James Bye and Davood Ghadami return to the BBC tonight (6 July) for the unscripted spin-off series Secrets From The Square.

In the episode, the pair, who play Martin Fowler and Kush Kazemi on the long-running soap, talk to presenter Stacey Dooley about their six years on the show.

Reflecting on some of their characters’ biggest storylines, including the love triangle involving Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner), and the knife crime-related storyline from 2018, Bye also spoke about the time he thought he had “killed” a particularly convincing stunt performer while filming a fight scene.

“We were fascinated,” said Ghadami. “This stunt guy – one-take wonder, right? He came down, he smacked his head, it made it look amazing. We both looked at each other.”

“I thought I’d killed him,” said Bye.

Secrets From The Square has been commissioned as a short-term replacement for EastEnders, which has been on production hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to New magazine ahead of the episode’s premiere, Bye said: “I hope [the audience will] see the real relationship between me and Davood. It’s not phoney; it’s a real on-screen/off-screen relationship.”

“They might get a few teasers as to what’s coming in the near future. Little bits that they don’t see, and I took Stacey around the Square which was quite nice, showing her and the audience parts of the market that you don’t get to see very often.”

Secrets From The Square airs at 8pm on Monday 6 July.

Last week, EastEnders star Adam Woodyat, who plays Ian Beale on the series, revealed that he is routinely bombarded with internet memes relating to his widely shared “crying” scene.
