EastEnders' Stacey Slater almost didn't exist as Lacey Turner auditioned for other family

EastEnders actress Lacey Turner has revealed things could have been very different for her on the BBC soap.

In fact, her character Stacey Slater, now Stacey Fowler, almost didn't exist.

It's hard to imagine Stacey not on the Square, with her being a key character in the Slater household, as well as her having been at the centre of some huge storylines over the years.

But back in 2004, Lacey was auditioning for another role and a completely different family on the show - but things did not work out.

She auditioned to be in the Miller family, aged 16, and while the character wasn't named it seems she could have played Demi, or perhaps another character who they didn't go ahead with.

If things had gone her way, she would have been in this family on the Square when they debuted in September 2004 - two months before she went on to make her own arrival.

Lacey was left devastated though, when bosses didn't give her the part despite her being in the final two.

But there was a reason for this, as they had decided after her audition that "she was a Slater, not a Miller".

She was then told that a part was being created for her to make her one of the Slaters, and Stacey was born.

Lacey made her debut as the feisty teenager in November that year, before introducing her mother Jean and her brother Sean later on.

If Lacey had have got the original part or declined the offer of Stacey, it seems the character might not have existed.

Speaking about it in a clip from spin-off series Secrets on the Square on Thursday, Lacey revealed all about how she landed the role.

She told host Stacey Dooley: "So I originally came for an audition for a Miller.

"So I went for my audition for the Miller family, and you had Tony Jordan in there, Julia Crampsie... so I got down to the last two.

"It was actually me and my cousin in real life who got down to the last two. They rang me and said, 'You haven't got it' and I actually cried in bed. I went to bed that night crying."

Lacey went on: "The next day I got a phone call from Julia. Tony Jordan, he said she's not a Miller she's a Slater so Julia rang me and said, 'They wanna create a part for you, do you wanna be a Slater?'.

"That was the best news ever."

EastEnders returns to BBC One on Monday September 7.
