EastEnders' Sonia steals Dot's life savings leaving viewers horrified

EastEnders fans have been left horrified by a shocking twist that saw Sonia Fowler trying to steal Albert Square legend Dot Cotton's money.

The BBC soap's New Year's Day episode was centered around what REALLY happened to Keanu Taylor on Christmas Day, with Sonia's on/off husband Martin right at the centre of the plot to fool the Mitchells into thinking he'd kill him, when in reality he'd let him walk free.

But as gripping as that storyline was, it shocked viewers with the unexpected exposure of Sonia as the thief responsible for stealing £5,000 from Dot's life savings. Throughout the flashback episode, fans saw Dot's granddaughter Dottie try to work out who the culprit was, firstly accusing Martin and then pointing the finger at Stuart and Rainie.

Suspicions grew around Sonia's involvement in the fraud when she appeared to ring the bank to get to the bottom of the theft, only for the camera to pan down and reveal that the phone was actually unplugged.

And then right at the end of Wednesday night's episode, millions saw Sonia on her laptop with Dot's bank account on the screen, leaving viewers stunned.

A guilt-ridden Sonia then deleted her internet history, confirming that she was wiping away the evidence of what she had done.

One viewer reacted on Twitter: "I got shivers down my spine whilst watching EastEnders earlier. Sonia pretending to phone the bank's fraud line after she tried to steal Dot's money: that was hard to watch," and another tweeted "Sonia - I am shocked and appalled. Evil Sonia. What a character shift."
