EastEnders' Shona McGarty teases new romance as she addresses co-star relationship

Shona McGarty has hinted that she is on course to finding love again, eight months after she and her ex and co-star Max Bowden split up.

The EastEnders star opened up about her relationship with co-star Max, saying she is still pals with her ex-boyfriend.

Shona who says she is now "talking" to a new love interest, opened up at the British Soap Awards, telling the Mirror: “It’s lovely to be here tonight because Max’s mum’s here and I haven’t seen her for ages, I adore her.

"So it’s lovely to catch up with her. We’re actually better than ever. It’s a friendship, we’re such in a good place.

"You take a risk, and you do something and it doesn’t work out, but that’s life, you’ve got to take that risk."

Asked about her new romance, the star - who plays Whitney Dean - added: "I’m speaking to someone at the moment but it’s very early days."

Last year, Shona, 31, and Max, 27, called it a day six months after sources claimed they were "inseparable" after striking up a romance.

Rumours of their relationship first came to light in May 2022 following Max's split from his ex-girlfriend, Roisin, before they made their relationship public in August of the same year.

At the time of their split, a source told The Sun: "There has been a lot going on in Max’s life and things were just getting too complicated with Shona being involved.

"Max will always have a lot of love and respect for Shona but it’s just not the right time.

"Everyone is trying to make things as least awkward as possible on set – luckily they don’t have many scenes together."

Max and Shona first ignited rumours they were an item after they were caught looking close to one another while attending a country music show at London's O2 arena.

Just weeks later, they added further fuel to the fire when the former Waterloo Road actor was snapped leaving her home.

Making their relationship official, Shona took to Instagram to share a string of snaps of herself and Max enjoying the House & Classics music festival.

Their split came just weeks after Max announced he had become a first-time dad to a son who he shares with an ex-girlfriend.

Max and his ex, Roisin, took to Instagram to share that their son, Reginald, had been born on September 19, five months after they made the decision to split.
