The main cast of a film about the Hatton Garden robbery has been announced, with the former EastEnders actor Larry Lamb being given the key role of heist ringleader Brian Reader. Also in the cast are Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey), Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck) and Phil Daniels (Quadrophenia).

The film, currently entitled The Hatton Garden Job, has started filming in London. It tells the story of the 2015 “robbery of the decade” that instantly became folklore after it became apparent that many of the perpetrators were well into their 60s. Reader, who was named in court as one of the key planners, was 77 years old when he was sentenced to six years in jail in March.

Written and directed by Green Street 3’s Ronnie Thompson, who also wrote the script, the film is described as a thriller about “a mysterious thief, who is presented with an opportunity to take down the exclusive Hatton Garden vault just days after leaving prison … [and recruits] a team of veteran British criminals all eager for one final chance at glory”.

Thompson’s movie faces stiff competition from two rival projects. Working Title have attached James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) as director of a film scripted by Joe Penhall. It is based on Mark Seal’s article about the robbery for Vanity Fair. Also in the running is The Hatton Garden Heist, to be directed by Gabe Turner (The Guvnors) and with a script by Down Terrace’s Rob Hill.
