EastEnders' Ian Beale proposes to Sharon Watts on deathbed in tragic twist

EastEnders ' Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) proposed to Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) in a shock twist on Tuesday's episode.

Ian discovered he had a bleed on the brain after his mysterious attack from an unknown assailant, and his prognosis is not good.

He discussed karma with his doctor when she told him she believed in reincarnation, and the conversation appeared to give him some food for thought.

Sharon was stunned when Ian popped the question as she comforted him at his bedside, after previously declaring his unrequited love for her.

"All I've ever wanted is to cushion your life," he told her.

"When I told you I loved you - "

Clearly feeling uncomfortable, Sharon interjected: "Oh Ian please, we sorted that."

Ian continued: "I've never stopped loving you, I've always loved you. I know you don't feel the same way about me, but please, let me take care of you.

"Sharon, will you marry me?"

Sharon simply stared at Ian, stunned, and did not reply - but it is unlikely she will say yes, especially as plenty of fans think she is the one who attacked him.

Dotty Cotton told Sharon that Ian was responsible for her son Dennis' death, and while she appeared not to believe it, if she has gathered more evidence and realised it's true, this could be her way to avenge her son.

One viewer tweeted: "I hope that Sharon takes some pages out of Angies book and she takes ian to the cleaners and leaves him out to dry."

"So even on Ian’s “death bed” he’s not telling Sharron about Denny? Instead he’s asking her to marry him? Mad man #EastEnders," wrote another.

"Phil better go mental on Ian after he finds out about the proposal #EastEnders," added a third.

*EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One
