EastEnders fans 'work out' George Knight's wife is iconic past character

The arrival of George Knight on Thursday's EastEnders prompted some detective work by eagle-eyed fans as they predict a big twist in the plot to come.

George - played by Colin Salmon - made his appearance on Albert Square in the latest episode of the BBC soap, as it was revealed he's the new boyfriend of Linda Carter's mum Elaine Peacock.

George is set to run the Queen Vic with Elaine and he's joined by his two daughters Gina ( Francesca Henry) and Anna (Molly Rainford), and they made a couple of references to the girls' mother. George seemed distracted as he made his way through the square and he took a call from a mystery person at one point and said he would contact them the next day as it wasn't a good time.

As the episode went on, viewers got some clues that the girls' mum hadn't been around for a while as they were revealed to secretly have a jewellery box which belonged to her, but it wasn't said whether she where she was, or if she was even still alive.

A new family comes to Albert Square (BBC)

Anna said at one point she needed something to "remember" her mum by when her sister raised the fact they shouldn't have the box. There were huge clues about some unknown secret and it was clear that the girls had to talk about their mother cryptically, but nothing else was given away.

There was however a sign that maybe the mother had passed away after George gave some advice to Ben Mitchell, who is trying to help daughter Lexi process the news her mum Lola is dead. George sounded like he'd been in a similar situation, and he'd had to deal with some bad behaviour from Gina as she got older because the girls had grown up without their mum.

And as George told Ben that somewhere along the road he realised all his daughter needed was a hug, viewers became convinced that something had happened to the mother of his girls - and that it confirmed how one iconic character is set to return.

Cindy Beale has been rumoured to be coming back to the Square after 20 years. The legendary character, played by Michelle Collins, supposedly died off screen during childbirth in 1998 but she's thought to be making a comeback over the next couple of months. And fans think she could have struck up a romance with George after faking her own death.

One moment which suggested that could be the case was when, while toasting to the future with Gina and dad George, Anna said that she liked Walford, and added that the place feels "familiar" with a knowing look on her face.

Fans took to Twitter to air their suspicions about the identity of the new family.

AmmyVanGar said: "I've worked out how Cindy's coming back to #EastEnders - she faked her death and went to work under a new identity as a holiday rep for Janus Holidays in Marbella, where she met and had a fling with George Knight - you heard it here first"

One viewer said: "Eastenders theory: if Cindy is returning, could she be the mother of newbies Gina and Anna and ex-wife of George Knight? Wasn't Cindy's sister called Gina? (Little hint). I could imagine Cindy has been living her days out in Marbella for the past 25 years!"

DorindaDeadly said: "Decided to watch the Knights’ #Eastenders debut and I’m already predicting that George will have some connection to Cindy Beale. I also think George or Ian may be the one who dies on Xmas Day."

MissCairneyB said: "Ok! So I instantly like George Knight… he’s gonna be a character but I feel Linda going to be right about him though… he’s gonna be upto his eyes in affairs…. and I do think the Knight Family is linked to Cindy Beale!"

One tweeted: "I think Cindy is George’s girls mum, you wait," while a fourth said: "The Cindy theory seems to be very popular now!! Do you Cindy is the Knight’s sisters mum?"

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
