EastEnders fans in tears over distressing scenes as Chantelle's family learn she's dead

EastEnders aired the immediate fallout to Chantelle Atkins' death on Monday night, and viewers were in tears.

The character was brutally killed by her abusive husband Gray Atkins in harrowing scenes, with him leaving her to die.

After years of mental and physical abuse, she finally plucked up the courage to stand up to him and told him she was leaving, but he shoved her with so much force she fell and landed on the open dishwasher behind her.

Chantelle landed on a knife that was facing upwards, and as she called out for help while bleeding to death, unable to move, Gray promised to help her.

He then cruelly left the room without calling for help, instead covering his tracks with him even leaving the house to give him self an alibi.

On Monday, following her death, Gray was being questioned at the police station about the events of that night.

At the same time, her parents Karen and Mitch were returning home from a family trip to Southend - where they had been with Chantelle just hours earlier.

She went home early with Gray and her two children due to the house security alarm being set off, and a short time later she was dead.

As Karen stepped out of the car she saw the police and flowers around Chantelle's house and knew something was wrong.

She soon broke down, as Billy Mitchell could be heard telling Mitch their daughter was dead.

Later on in the episode, Chantelle's sister Bernadette hugged a giant teddy Mitch had won for Chantelle, with Karen heard on the phone to the police asking for Gray's release.

They had no idea he was the reason she was dead, while Mitch was suspicious something was wrong with his daughter in the days leading up to her death.

Her brother Keegan was then seen breaking down in shock, over the fact he didn't get to say goodbye before she died.

As the family reeled, Mitch wanted to speak with youngest daughter Bailey to tell her the news in person.

Viewers were in tears watching as the family struggled to process that Chantelle was gone, with Karen later hugging Gray and breaking down yet again over her loss.

Many viewers took to Twitter to share their upset and heartache over the distressing scenes, as others spoke of hoping Chantelle would get justice.
