EastEnders fans baffled as Sam Mitchell fails to recognise own son Ricky

EastEnders fans were a little confused on Tuesday night, as Sam Mitchell was reunited with her young son Richard, known as Ricky, but she didn't realise it.

In fact, after six years away from Walford, Sam failed to even recognise her child until her ex Jack Branning revealed who he was.

Ricky also failed to realise the woman he was talking to was his mother, after being abandoned by her six years ago.

Both characters are played by different cast members to those portraying Sam and little Ricky when they were last in the Square together, so perhaps that is why!

Ricky has recently grow up a lot, with viewers even stunned to see how different he looked.

EastEnders fans were a little confused on Tuesday night, as Sam Mitchell was reunited with her young son Richard, known as Ricky (BBC)

But they were a little confused as to how and why Sam wouldn't realise she was talking to her own son.

It appears they'e have had no contact since 2016, when Sam ditched her son and left him with Jack who has raised him ever since.

So when Sam arrived in the Square and had a football kicked at her head by Ricky, she wasted no time in threatening him.

Ricky also failed to realise the woman he was talking to was his mother (BBC)

Ricky soon informed his dad Jack who it was that had burst his football, and he was mortified to realise it was his ex fling Sam.

As he walked over and asked why she was back in Walford, Sam clocked Ricky was sat with him and partner Denise.

It's then that she made the connection and asked: "Is that Richard?" to which Jack confirmed it was.

As Sam admitted: "I didn't recognise him," he told her: "Yeah, well kids change a lot in six years."

Sam didn't seem too keen to see Ricky though, and soon ditched the reunion - while Denise and Jack will be left torn over whether to tell his son who Sam really is.

But viewers were a little confused at how Ricky would not recognise his mum, given he lived with her for six years.

He was in her care since birth until him moving to Walford in 2016, so fans believed he would recognise her - and that Sam would know who he was.

Reacting to the scenes on Instagram and Twitter, one fan asked: "How can't she recognise her own son?"

Another agreed: "Hang on a sec, isn’t ricky her son... how can she not recognise him?????? What did I just watch."

A third added: "How could she not recognise her own son??" while another viewer said: "Not sure it’s realistic for her not to recognise her own son AT ALL. It’s been 6 years, not 60."

The comments kept on coming too, with another tweet reading: "Wait, wasn’t that boy Ricky? You’re telling me that Sam didn’t recognise her own son and vice versa? Awkward."
