EastEnders fan in disbelief after memorial plaque is found at Barry's death spot

EastEnders fans were stunned to discover a 'memorial' plaque at the location where character Barry Evans died in 2004.

The iconic scenes went down in EastEnders history when 16 years ago, Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) dramatically pushed her husband Barry (Shaun Williamson) over a cliff.

Yesterday, one soap fan made the surprise discovery of a memorial plaque by the roadside in Scotland.

"Found this today at Rest and be Thankful area," the fan wrote on a Facebook page, alongside a picture of the plaque.

The memorial, placed on some rocks by the A83, read: "Barry from 'EastEnders' DIED HERE 2nd January 2004."

In the famous EastEnders scenes, characters Janine and Barry were enjoying a walk in the Scottish Moors shortly after getting married when things took a turn for the worst.

Janine finally snapped and revealed that the wedding was a sham before confessing that she had a secret affair with boyfriend Paul Trueman.

Despite the shocking revelations, Barry begged her not to leave him.

As he tried to embrace his wife, Janine sent her husband hurtling to his death and he hit his head on the rocks.

She ended up inheriting all of his money after his untimely death while his son Jack ended up with nothing.

EastEnders' villain Janine got away with his murder, and even went on to kill again throughout her appearance on the show.

After discovering the plaque, some fans expressed their shock at learning the scenes were filmed in Scotland.

One EastEnders viewer wrote: "DID NOT KNOW THIS!!!! It's only taken me 16 years to find that out!!! Every day is a school day."

"I hope you laid flowers as a mark of respect," joked another.

"I never knew this and I actually LIVE in Scotland," wrote a third.

Eager fans that wish to visit the famous site can find the tiny memorial along the picturesque A83 Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint.
