EastEnders bosses to 'beg' for June Brown's return to the square after calling it quits

EastEnders bosses are eager to get June Brown to return as Dot Cotton in the soap, a source is believed to have recently said.

The much-loved 93-year-old actress left viewers devastated after she made the shock announcement that she was quitting from the popular BBC show after 35 years.

According to an insider who spoke to the Sun Online , producers will no doubt be begging June to make a return as soon as the storyline comes up.

“June is an extremely popular cast member, so of course the show wants her to return. As soon as they have a big storyline for her, they’ll be on the phone begging her to come back,” the source said.

“BBC bosses know she’s a legend and viewers will want her back on screen as soon as possible,” the continued.

For the time being bosses are yet to contact her in regards to a possible comeback.

The veteran actress had been frustrated by recent storylines and declined a retainer that she was offered by the show.

Despite seemingly hopeful sources betting for her return, June appeared adamant that she’s not coming back.

Speaking on the Distinct Nostalgia podcast to former co-star Rani Singh, who played shop owner Sufia Karim, June said: “I don’t want a retainer for EastEnders, I’ve left. I’ve left for good.

She went on to tell the podcast that she felt a connection to her character, but she had been feeling down recently and was ready to go.

“I’ve played two people simultaneously for 35 years. Really Dot wasn’t me, but spiritually she probably was,” she admitted.

June has been a popular addition to the square ever since the BBC soap began in 1985.

She’s had a plethora of complicated and touching story lines and has even dodged an attempted poisoning by her troubled son ‘nasty’ Nick Cotton.

It’s not the first time that the character has had a hiatus from the show, and in 1993 the lovable character was living in Gravesend before writers gave her a comeback.

Fans were left frustrated that the EastEnders heavyweight wasn’t given an iconic exit.
