EastEnders boss teases Adam Woodyatt’s explosive Ian Beale exit storyline

EastEnders boss Jon Sen has teased Ian Beale’s dramatic exit from Walford later this year as he is set to become the most hated resident in Walford.

Earlier this month, the BBC soap confirmed that actor Adam Woodyatt would be taking some time off as his character is written out.

Speaking to the Mirror and other news outlets, the executive producer revealed that Ian would become the “most hated man in Walford”.

Questioned on whether any storylines were scrapped as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, he said: “No, we adjusted.

“I think it’s the responsibility of a soap to reflect the world and reflect what’s going on in the great world and in society, and the societal shifts that have happened in the country and reflect those narratives of what’s going on.

“So of course we wanted to reflect that, but we just adjusted the stories that we had to really, really embrace that.

“And as we said, the huge impact on domestic violence narrative and we really touch on that. That’s really a powerful story that we can move to the heart of the show.”

He also suggested that the spotlight would also shine on the Carters’ situation and, unsurprisingly, Ian.

Viewers will recall that the final episode on TV before the soap went off air involved Ian and Sharon being confirmed as the new joint owners of The Queen Vic.

However, fans also know that Sharon is still unaware of the part that Ian played in her son Dennis’ death.

“Ian’s creating as many enemies as before,” Jon continued. “And those stories are carrying on from before.”

Meanwhile, Kate Oates added: “Sharon doesn’t know about Ian’s role in Dennis’ death, so that’s an unexploded bomb and the irony is that she is defending him as he becomes increasingly unpopular with other people in the Square and members of his own family.

“So we’ll be watching that unfold.”
