EastEnders airs secret heartache for Callum Highway as he's haunted by his past

EastEnders revealed Bobby Beale's fate on Thursday, after he was seen heading onto a train track believing he was following his dead sister Lucy.

Bobby was just a kid when he accidentally murdered his sister, while his involvement was covered up for two years with even him not realising he'd done it.

Years on, and just months after being released from a youth detention centre, Bobby has struggled with his guilt and recent scenes left viewers concerned.

But the episode revealed he wasn't the only one struggling with their past, moments after Callum Highway saved Bobby from being hit by a train.

As the pair shared a heart-to-heart after the incident, Callum offered some wise words as he encouraged Bobby to accept himself and forgive himself.

Callum appeared to be struggling to do just that though, clearly affected by what almost happened on the train tracks.

He told Bobby: "Before I left the army they used to call it shellshock. You relive it all again, the flashbacks, the nightmares, the guilt. I used to wake up hearing explosions, I'd dream I was back there all the time.

"We went to save this kid, land mines everywhere, we got the kid out but we couldn’t save the mum. I wanted her to forgive me. The truth is Bobby, you're not gonna get that. You've gotta learn how to forgive yourself."

He added: "I’ve spent years not accepting who I am, fighting all this stuff but it's my stuff and there's no point fighting it anymore."

Callum them told Bobby he needed to learn to forgive himself, and accept all of him which Bobby attempted to do.

But at the hospital it was clear Callum was troubled after a catch-up with Ben Mitchell, who he was supposed to be going on a date with.

After agreeing to call him later, Callum headed out but he soon broke down in tears in the hospital corridor clearly distressed by what had happened, and by his own past.

Viewers were moved by the scenes, with one fan tweeting: "Callum still struggling :(."

EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
