EastEnders airing final episode tonight as BBC soap goes off air for first time in 35 years

EastEnders will be airing its final episode tonight as it goes off air for the first time in 35 years.

The BBC soap suspended filming back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning its pre-filmed episodes will run out this evening.

Cast and crew have since returned to set to continue shooting and, in place of its Monday and Tuesday episodes, BBC One will air Secrets from the Square, hosted by Stacey Dooley, and iconic episodes from the past.

But the final episode tonight might end on a cliffhanger as Sharon Mitchell makes a big decision.

Phil nastily kicked Sharon out of the house after she chose to bring up her son Kayden, rather than give him to Karen.

The hardman is keen to sign the paperwork to finalise the Queen Vic contract but Linda is reluctant to sell to him after how he's treated Sharon.

After Linda lets rip at Phil, Mick tries to appeal to Sharon to try and convince her to sell the Vic to Phil because he's worried about her drinking.

Sharon agrees with Mick's reasoning but she takes matters into her own hands... what is she planning to do?

When new EastEnders episodes air later on in the year, the soap will air four days a week but will be 20 minutes long, rather than 30 minutes.

Executive Producer Jon Sen said: “Resuming production is incredibly exciting and challenging in equal measure.

"Since we postponed filming we’ve been working non-stop trialling techniques, filming methods and new ways of working so that we can return to screens four times a week – as EastEnders should be.

"Filming will inevitably be a more complex process now so creating 20 minute episodes will enable us to ensure that when we return, EastEnders will still be the show the audience know and love.”

*EastEnders airs tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One
