Fire crews have returned to a Victorian seafront hotel days after it was engulfed in flames after part of the building collapsed.

The Grade II listed Claremont Hotel in Eastbourne "remains unstable" and two fire crews and council building control officers were called to the scene at about 4pm on Wednesday, the fire service said.

Members of the public have been told to stay away from the area and cordons are in place.

Around 60 firefighters and 12 fire engines descended on the hotel last Friday after a blaze spread rapidly through the old structure.

Six people were treated for minor injuries and one was taken to hospital for minor breathing difficulties.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service tweeted on Wednesday evening: "We currently have firefighters back on scene at the Claremont in Eastbourne. Part of the building has collapsed. Building Control are on scene. The building remains unstable. Please avoid the area. Cordons are still in place."

The Standard has contacted East Sussex FRS for comment.
