East Yorkshire tyre firm which started in pub celebrates 50 years of business

A business which started out in the pub and has grown into an established tyre fitter has celebrated 50 years of trading.

Adam’s Tyres, based in Beverley, was founded by Mark Adams in 1969.

Mr Adams suffered from epilepsy, and struggled to hold down a regular job, but went on to launch is own business in the most unlikely of circumstances.

His son Jon is now the manager at the East Yorkshire tyre specialist, and shared the story.

He said: “Because my dad was epileptic, he struggled to get a job, and went from role to role but nothing set on fire as it were.

“Then one night in a pub, someone mentioned they were selling some tyres, so he went with literally £2 in his pocket, bought them and sold them on to a friend.

“The business started out with just him working out of a little shed, and has not grown to what it is today.”

Adam’s Tyres now operates out of premises in Albion Court in Beverley.

The company runs five mobile vans, and stocks thousands of tyres from industry-leading brands.

Adam’s Tyres also offers maintenance and breakdown services across Hull and East Yorkshire, and has come a long way since its launch 50 years ago.

To celebrate half a century of business, the family firm staged a party on Tuesday, October 1 with a giant tyre-shaped cake.

“In the last year, we have really pulled the business into the modern era,” Jon said.

“The business has grown a lot since then – we are now running five mobile vans and look after some of the biggest company fleets in the area.

“We are one of the largest suppliers of Nexen Tyres, and are really pushing the business forwards.”

Jon entered the family business as soon as he finished school, and started out fitting tyres.

He now works more in an office and management capacity, but said he is not afraid to get his hands dirty when needed.

With big plans for the future of Adam’s Tyres, Jon said business was looking good.

“Our main aim now it to move into bigger premises, but it is impossible in Beverley to find anything,” he said.

“We want to stay in the area, so at the moment we are waiting for something to come up that is right for us.”

Adam’s Tyres partners some of the biggest tyre brands, from Dunlop and Michelin to Goodyear.
