East Renfrewshire to 'seriously consider' any request to take Afghan refugees

East Renfrewshire would give “serious” consideration to any requests to rehouse Afghan refugees.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul earlier this month, two decades after they were ousted by the United States and allies.

Since then, thousands of people have been fleeing the country.

A spokesman said East Renfrewshire Council has yet to be approached about accommodating refugees by any authorities.

But he added: “If and when we do, any request to accommodate Afghan refugees will be given urgent and serious consideration.”

The UK Government announced an Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme, allowing 5,000 Afghans to settle in the UK in the first year. It said 20,000 refugees would be rehoused in the long-term.

Nicola Sturgeon has called for that commitment “to go further”, and said the number of refugees coming to Scotland has yet to be confirmed.

She said Scotland “stands ready and willing” and Syrian refugees who came to the country are “contributing massively”.

East Renfrewshire Council previously participated in the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Scheme.

Glasgow is an asylum dispersal area, and has already given homes to 62 refugees from Afghanistan since June.

The city council has said it stands ready to assist those who are evacuating the country. Cllr Jen Layden, the city’s convener for equalities and human rights, called on the UK Government to launch a similar programme to that put in place for fleeing Syrians.

“They must mobilise an Afghan programme with funding for local authorities and third sector organisations to support,” she said.
