East Renfrewshire schools to close on Monday for Queen's funeral

Schools in East Renfrewshire will be closed on Monday as “a mark of respect” on the day of the Queen’s funeral.

East Renfrewshire Council has confirmed schools, nurseries and family centres will shut on September 19, which is a bank holiday.

It comes after the UK’s longest serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on Thursday. Her funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday, with her coffin set to be moved from St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh to London later today.

In a statement, East Renfrewshire Council said: “Following confirmation that the day of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, September 19 is to be a bank holiday, all the council’s schools, nurseries and family centres will be closed as a mark of respect.

“Our office buildings will also be shut, although some essential services will still run.”

East Renfrewshire’s Provost Mary Montague was at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh yesterday for the Thanksgiving Service to celebrate the life of the Queen.

She also attended a Proclamation of the King outside Renfrewshire House, Paisley, on Sunday, along with the Provosts of Renfrewshire and Inverclyde.

Books of condolence have been opened at the council’s Eastwood and Barrhead offices following the death of Her Majesty. Members of the public who wish to sign the books can do so between 9am and 5pm, from Monday to Saturday, at either office.
