East ready 'to press play' on more GP consortiums

The East of England could shortly see 95% of its GP practices in pathfinder consortiums, with 20% seeking authorisation to take over commissioning, according to Paul Zollinger-Read, the region's director of commissioning development.

He said that the area could quickly move from 85% of practices in pathfinders. "We've had a pause. We're just about to press play again," he told a session at Smart Healthcare Live.

Zollinger-Read told Guardian Healthcare that there was "lots of enthusiasm" among the region's doctors to set up GP commissioning consortiums, including the 21 practices that are not currently involved in pathfinders. However, he added that the speed at which this happens depends on the government's approach, which the prime minister is expected to announce later today.
