East Midlands Railway looking for new apprentices at Nottingham depot

East Midlands Railway is looking for six new apprentices to work at its maintenance depot in Nottingham.

The rail firm said it is looking for the "engineers of the future" to join its fleet engineering team, and the six new roles will be spread across Nottingham, Derby and Leeds.

The engineering apprentices will help a team of more than 450 maintenance staff look after the fleet of more than 100 trains.

All apprentices will be trained to level three standard and will be taught in-depth electrical and mechanical engineering while on the job for a more practical experience, EMR says.

Eleanor Nugent, 16, of Derby, praised the hands-on skills and theory that she has learned working for EMR.

She said: "My friends and family thought it was really good that I've taken the responsibility to become an engineer and do something different.

"It's really good and they provide a lot of help. I'd say anyone thinking about a career they should definitely do it because it's really good."

Passengers in Nottingham and the wider East Midlands have been promised "more seats, less crowding and quicker and more reliable journeys" to London St Pancras following a pledged £1.5million investment in the Midlands Mainline.

The line connects the capital to Nottingham, Beeston, Leicester, Derby and Sheffield.

It comes as part of a wider £600million investment in the rail services between now and 2027, including the complete replacement of the current train fleet.

EMR says it is a great time for apprentices to get involved.

Kirsty Derry, HR director for EMR, added: "We're very keen to bring in people from very different backgrounds.

"What we need is the talent of the future coming in wanting to be part of almost a 200-year-old heritage, but bringing in that modern approach and that fresh energy so that we stay relevant.

"So they will bring diversity of experience and diversity of thought, I think new ideas and maybe a fresh approach to help us to connect much better with a broad range of customers that we deal with on a daily basis."
