East Midlands McDonald's to become drive-thru Covid-19 test centre

A McDonald's restaurant in the East Midlands is to become a drive-thru coronavirus testing centre for key workers and NHS staff.

The fast food chain has announced a restaurant in Leicester will take on the role, after branches across the country closed due to the ongoing pandemic.

The outlet, at Meridian Business Park, has been handed over for use by DHU Healthcare to become the testing centre, which will allow frontline staff to quickly receive Covid-19 testing.

It follows an announcement by the government that healthcare staff can now get access to free coronavirus testing kits, as well as other key workers and their families.

It is part of the government's goal to get to 100,000 Covid-19 tests per day by the end of the month, with McDonald's looking to also play its part in the testing process.

The fast food chain has outlined other ways it has supported the community through the pandemic, with all its outlets in the country closing last month.

The company has donated more than 300 tonnes of food and 100,000 litres of milk to key workers and vulnerable people through food banks, across 1,900 towns and cities in the UK.
