East Midlands Airport welcomes return of covid PCR tests for travellers arriving in UK

East Midlands Airport has welcomed the return of covid PCR tests for travellers arriving in the UK as the government attempts to curb the spread of the Omicron variant.

All people travelling to the UK will be forced to take a PCR test from 4am tomorrow (Tuesday, November 30).

Prime Minister Boris Johnson made the announcement during a briefing on Saturday, November 27, after the worrying new variant was identified in Nottingham.

Previously, travellers were able to take a rapid antigen test after arriving, which are significantly cheaper.

Clare James, managing director at the airport, has previously criticised the government over its handling of the aviation industry.

However, despite the added cost for travellers, EMA welcomed the government's response.

A spokesperson said: “We recognise the need for swift action to contain the spread of the Omicron variant. We welcome government’s commitment to carrying out scientific studies to understand the risk it poses to the British public, and to reviewing the need for additional travel restrictions at the earliest opportunity.

“Throughout the pandemic, East Midlands Airport has supported the government’s public health measures and will continue to do so. Customers and colleagues have been asked to wear face coverings since summer 2020, and we have put in place a range of additional safety measures in our terminals.

"All of these will remain in place to help facilitate the full re-opening of international travel as soon as possible.”

The airport added that it was "difficult to say" how it would be affected by the announcement, saying it depends on how long the additional measures stay in place.
