East Midlands Airport reveals why plane heading for Chicago had to turn back

East Midlands Airport has confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that a flight has landed safely back at the airport after turning back while in the air due to an engine fault.

The pilots detected the engine fault while in the air and turned back, which is common practice, the airport said.

It was a cargo transport heading for Chicago and had no passengers on board.

Before it could land safely it had to burn fuel so it was circling overhead for a while this afternoon.

The ABX Air plane is reported to have turned back west of Ireland and was holding its altitude at 7,000ft near to East Midlands Airport while it burned the excess fuel.

It landed at approximately 5.30pm on Thursday July 30 with both engines reported to still be working.

Crews will now inspect the aircraft on the ground.
