East Midlands Airport evacuated after 'security threat' amid scenes of 'mayhem'

East Midlands Airport's departure lounge has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found.

ITV News said the suspicious device was found in an item of hand luggage with a police cordon in place while the device was examined.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal were called and confirmed the item did not pose any risk of harm to the public.

Eight departures were delayed impacting around 3000 passengers and three inbound flights were diverted to other airports, but the airport says restictions have now been lifted.

Passengers at the airport in Castle Donington reported the incident at around 4pm today.

One witness described the scene as 'mayhem' to Nottinghamshire Live.

Another tweeted: "Any idea what is happening at East Midlands Airport?

"Airport departures evacuated. In a lounge and told to stay put.

"East Midlands airport (where I am currently) being evacuated… #traveldramas no idea what is causing this disruption…"

Passenger Sarah Hartles said: "Its an absolute shambles here. No one relaying any information."

She told Birmingham Live: "All we were told was 'get up and move!' - they've placed us in a part of the airport they have said is safe. There's nothing on the boards and no one saying anything other than no-one is going anywhere. We've been given water thankfully as it's so hot.

"It's pretty full. We're on floors and all sorts. I understand things are done to keep us safe. There's just no communication. We went to board at 3.20 pm and it happened just after that."

Multiple other reports online suggest an evacuation has taken place, with another person tweeting that their car is not being allowed in.

One passenger posted on their social media: "First flight since Covid and a threat so had to evacuate - holidays are fun they said!"

A police statement says: "Shortly after 3.10pm today (Tuesday 10 May) a report was received in relation to a suspicious package being located within the main terminal at East Midlands Airport.

"In the interest of officer and public safety the terminal has been evacuated.

"Explosive Ordnance Disposal were called to assist officers and determined the item did not pose any risk of harm to the public.

"No criminal offences were identified, no-one has been arrested and the call was made in line with appropriate protocol."

A spokesperson for East Midlands Airport told The Mirror: “Following reports of a suspicious package, East Midlands Airport’s terminal was evacuated this afternoon as a precaution to enable police to carry our necessary enquiries.

"It has now re-opened and we are working with the airlines to get passengers away on their flights. We thank customers for their patience and understanding.”
