East Lothian youths throw life rings into Forth after destroying safety equipment

Youths tore lifesaving equipment off the wall at an East Lothian harbour before launching it into the Forth in a dangerous act of vandalism.

Soaring temperatures saw dozens of youngsters flock to Musselburgh beach earlier this week to make the most of the warm weather.

Edinburgh Live reported how fights broke out between teenagers on the beaches at nearby Portobello over the weekend as the mercury rose to 24 degrees.

However, locals reported seeing some pulling life rings off the nearby harbour wall further down the coast after jumping into the Forth to cool off, while others disposed of the equipment in the water.

Several of the safety devices positioned around the area to save those getting into difficulty were also damaged in the mindless attack.

Police have since launched an effort to trace those responsible and have asked any local residents to come forward if they have information.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were called to Musselburgh Harbour on the morning of 21/07/2021 following a report of vandalism to the lifesaving equipment.

“Groups of youths have been jumping into the water and then pulling at the life rings causing them to be damaged, with a number of them being thrown into the sea.

“There has also been a number of reported incidents of vandalism to the area.

“Details have been noted and enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

“This act could have serious repercussions should that safety equipment be required and it not being there.

“If you have any information in relation to this incident please call 101 and quote PS-20210720-0809.”

Six people were arrested following disorder at Portobello, with officers adding further action was likely after several incidents of anti-social behaviour.

A “significant police presence” has since been deployed in the area.
