East Lothian will move to level three as coronavirus cases rise by over 50% in a week

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that East Lothian will move back into level three restrictions from Friday.

The First Minister made the announcement at the weekly review, where it was also confirmed that Edinburgh, Midlothian and West Lothian will also remain in level three.

East Lothian had been moved into level two, however this will now change after Nicola Sturgeon stated that "case numbers have increased by more than 50 per cent in the past week."

This will now mean that the area will face tougher restrictions over the festive period, with hospitality venues now forced to close at 6pm, with a ban on the sale of alcohol.

Speaking about the decision, the First Minister said:

"Unfortunately and with obvious regret the cabinet has decided that East Lothian will move back to level three from Friday.

"This is a difficult but essential decision to seek to avoid further deterioration in the situation and keep people across the Lothians as safe as possible.

Nicola Sturgeon added that she understood the "real and continued difficulties for many people", but deemed the move as "essential".
