East Lothian takeaway beg man to give back £50 they handed him in staff mix up

An East Lothian takeaway has pleaded with a man to return £50 after a mix-up with the cash.

Dunbar's Oriental Inn has called on the customer to return the money and asked people to share their appeal.

The takeaway explained that a well-meaning staff member had given a man the sizeable sum after believing he had dropped the cash - but it wasn't his to take, it has emerged.

It turned out that the money did not belong to him at all after the rightful owner came looking for the £50.

They even gave a description of the customer's car, revealing he was driving a dark-coloured vehicle and had a white Labrador or similar breed with him.

The takeaway explained a male customer was given £50 by the staff - who thought they had dropped the money - at around 7:30-8pm on Friday night.

They added: "Could the customer please return to the Oriental Inn with the £50 as we have identified the rightful owner? Share if possible. Thank you!"

Oriental Inn confirmed to Edinburgh Live that the money is yet to be returned.

It's unclear whether the customer intentionally took the cash knowing it wasn't his, or it was an innocent mistake.

However, locals have called on the mystery man to "do the right thing" and return the money to the takeaway, with one describing his actions as "despicable".

It comes after an Edinburgh restaurant was forced to make an appeal to customers after potentially losing thousands of pounds in takings after dozens of people failed to show up for bookings in a single day.

Miller and Carter on Frederick Street say a total of 43 people failed to make it for booked times at their restaurant on Friday.

They are urging anyone who's unable to make it along to get in touch beforehand so they have the chance to rebook the table.
