East Lothian supports Afghanistan refugees, with urgent talks on resettling families

East Lothian Council has become the latest local authority in Scotland to confirm its support to Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban.

The local authority has said it is holding urgent talks to identify how much support it can give to resettling families.

All Scottish councils have been asked to consider signing up to a Government Afghan Resettlement Scheme.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “Despite the challenges we face in relation to the significant need and demand for affordable housing in East Lothian, we are urgently considering the support that East Lothian Council can provide as part of the UK and Scottish Government Afghan resettlement scheme in the context of this unfolding crisis.

“More detail will be available once we have identified what resources we can provide.”

In 2016 the council was among a number to sign up to support Syrian refugees with a pledge to find homes for seven families over five years in the county.
