East Lothian standing ovation for Whitecraig shopkeeper who passed away

A popular Whitecraig shopkeeper who passed away last month received a standing ovation from East Lothian locals.

Sukhdevgar Gosai who was known in the community as 'David' died after suffering from a stroke aged 87 on March 25.

However, he wasn't able to have the traditional Hindu funeral his family wanted due to social distancing rules.

The family of the much-loved Indian shopkeeper, who owned the Whitecraig General Store, has thanked the local community for giving him a standing ovation on the day of his funeral.

His daughter Nisha spoke to East Lothian Courier about how the family had their spirits lifted when they saw locals out clapping to pay tribute to her father.

Locals also paid Tribute Sukhdevgar Gosai on social media, with one local saying “He was a lovely man!!! Never ever passed without speaking!!!”

Another added: "True gentleman – heart of gold.”
