East Lothian shop staff terrified as knife wielding thug steals cash in armed raid

Shop workers at an East Lothian newsagents have been left petrified after a thug threatened them with a knife before making off with a sum of cash from the till in a terrifying daylight raid.

Staff were badly shaken when the man produced the weapon before demanding they hand over money and escaping at Sweet News on North Berwick High Street at 2pm on Thursday, May 20.

A three-figure sum was stolen from the store in the incident and police have now launched an appeal for information to trace the man responsible.

They have asked passengers and drivers of a coach which was passing at the time to come forward if they saw anything deemed suspicious, while drivers have also been encouraged to check dashboard cameras.

The suspect is described as white, around 5 '5 in height with a slight build and was said to be wearing a black coat with a hood, a black face covering and black trousers or jogging bottoms.

Inspector David Hughes, North Berwick Police Station, said: "Thankfully no one was injured as a result of this robbery, however, it was a very frightening experience for the staff in the store.

"The High Street is very busy around this time and there were a good number of people about, so I would ask that anyone, who has not yet come forward to police, get in touch as their information could be very helpful to our enquiry.

"We know that there were a couple of delivery drivers in the street and also a coach passing at the time. We'd be keen to see any dash-cam footage they may have."

Information can be passed to officers via 101. Please quote reference number 1776 of 20 May, 2021 when calling. Alternatively, details can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
