East Lothian set to get waterpark and new train station in council's carbon neutral plans

East Lothian could be home to a water park if council plans are given the green light.

The proposed water park would be sandwiched between Cockenzie, Port Seton and Longniddry

According to the plans the waterpark could feature an outdoor pool with the potential to introduce watersports into the area such as kayaking.

The waterpark is just one of the many ambitious visions revealed by East Lothian Council's carbon-neutral map.

The map also outlines how they wish to develop Blindwells, an under-construction town near Tranent.

Exciting news plans could also see the local area benefit from a new train station, new leisure routes, and a series of waterways.

The map is part of a bigger movement from the council to develop areas in East Lothian while tackling the climate crisis.

East Lothian locals can have their say on the plans which will launch on their consultation hub from today onwards.

The eight-week consultation will cover issues across East Lothian such as how travel can be improved and other suggestions on how to make the area more carbon neutral.

Project leader Douglas Proudfoot said the idea behind the new water features across the area was to avoid putting pipes underground to remove groundwater and utilise it instead as the new town of Blindwells develops on the former opencast coal site of the same name between Longniddry and Tranent.

The first houses are due to be built later this year.

He said: “We have a unique opportunity here with a blank canvas for a new town at a time when climate change is central to policies.

“I also think the Covid-19 pandemic has driven forward the idea that people can work from home and find alternative ways to work with the support of digital technology.”
