East Lothian ranger blows up WW2 explosive on popular beach for bomb squad

Police and a bomb disposal unit rushed to a popular East Lothian beach last week after a countryside ranger discovered an undetonated WW2 explosive.

East Lothian Countryside Ranger Jen got more than she bargained for on Thursday last week when she came across what she thought could be a wartime ordnance on Gullane Beach.

The police and bomb disposal unit were called and the area of the beach cordoned off.

After a closer look the bomb disposal squad decided that they needed to safely detonate the device - with Jen getting the fun task of pressing the button to trigger the controlled explosion.

Following the disposal, the team were able to confirm it was an armour piercing naval shell most likely leftover from when the beach was used for practising the D-Day landings.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 11.30am on Thursday to a report of an item on the beach near Marine Terrace, Gullane.

“EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) attended and it was made safe.”
