East Lothian mechanic fined after going into rage when spying on partner's phone

A mechanic flew into a rage after going through his partner’s mobile and accusing her of cheating on him.

Hamish Thomson shouted and swore at the woman after sneaking a look at her phone and alleging infidelity.

After police were called to the East Lothian home, Thomson told cops: “Come on, you know how it is? I’ve just being arguing with the missus.”

Thomson, 22, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday and admitted a charge of threatening and abusive behaviour.

Fiscal depute Christine Brownlie said Thomson had been at his partner’s house on May 21.

Ms Brownlie said Thomson went through the woman’s phone while she was out of the living room.

When she returned, the court heard Thomson accused her of “cheating on him” as he’d seen “messages” on her phone.

Ms Brownlie said Thomson continued to “behave aggressively” before going outside.

His partner phoned her mother to ask her to call the police, the court was told, and officers found Thomson still outside the address.

Defence agent Mary Moultrie, acting for Thomson, said it was an “isolated incident”. She added her client “does not expect a reconciliation” with the woman.

Sheriff Roderick Flinn said he accepted it was a “one-off” and fined Thomson, of Gullane, East Lothian, £150.
